What an afternoon!

Our whole school enjoyed this inclusive event and there was even sunshine.
"All our hard work has paid off.", said Mrs Shannon
Co-op Academy Portland has been awarded the Gold Award in the Primary Futures Recognition Scheme, recognising the school’s inspiring work to help pupils dream big, explore future careers.
Dear Parents and Carers,
I hope you’ve had a lovely summer break and managed to soak up some sunshine with your
families. I’m thrilled to be welcoming everyone back for what promises to be a fantastic
school year - my first full academic year as Head of School, and I couldn’t be more excited!
A very warm welcome to all of our new starters in F1 and F2, as well as to the children
joining us in other year groups; we’re so pleased to have you with us. We’re also thinking of
our former Year 6 pupils as they start their journey at secondary school as well as some of
the pupils that have joined some new schools from other year groups - we hope they’ve had
a great start.
It’s been a busy summer here at school with lots of work being completed to improve the
environment even further. Over the next few weeks, we will have a play frame built on the
middle yard as well as a new outdoor classroom and some new equipment being installed
on the top yard. The building looks brilliant thanks to the hard work of our amazing staff, with
a special shout out to our site manager Dave Barker, and we're all ready to hit the ground
running.
We’re delighted to welcome two new Teaching Assistants to our team - Miss Kinsley-Smith
and Miss Wockenforth. They’ll be joining our brilliant support staff and getting to know the
children over the coming weeks.
We’re also really pleased to share that Mrs Hayes will now be taking on the role of SENCo
this year. She’ll be organising a SEND coffee morning soon to introduce herself and connect
with parents. Please keep an eye out for more information.
Looking ahead, we’ve got lots coming up already! Our Year 6 residential is only a few weeks
away. This will be a fantastic experience that’s set to be a highlight of the year and a real
opportunity for our Year 6 team to build relationships ahead of an incredibly busy and
important year. We’ll be holding an information session soon to share everything you need to
know.
Our after-school club offer will be sent out next week, along with a full list of key dates for the
year - this will include things like parents’ evenings, sports days, school discos and other
events, so that you can plan ahead with confidence.
In the coming days, you’ll also receive some important admin bits from us: permissions,
health care plan updates, and login details for various platforms. We’ll also send out our
updated home-school agreement, please do take a moment to read and sign it to confirm
your support.
PE days for this half-term are listed below. Children can come to school in their PE kits on
those days. Please refer to our uniform letter as all staff will be enforcing our uniform rules
and phone calls will be made to parents/carers as well as any identified items being
confiscated.
I can’t wait to get started and see all of the children’s smiling faces back in school. Thank
you, as always, for your continued support - here’s to a brilliant year together!
Important Message
From Thursday 4th September, parents/carers will be required to drop their children at the
gate (where Mrs Hall and Mr. Leathers will greet the children and receive any key messages
to pass on). No adults will be allowed on the playground as this has been causing some
children to become dysregulated and it has been difficult to keep them safe with so many
people entering and exiting the gates.
For children in F1 and F2, parents and carers can still
drop off at the door if they feel that this is necessary.
PE Days – Autumn 1
Children can wear their PE kits on the following days:
● F1 - Thursday
● F2 - Tuesday & Wednesday
● Year 1 – Monday & Friday
● Year 2 – Monday & Tuesday
● Year 3 – Monday Tuesday
● Year 4 – Thursday & Friday
● Year 5 – Wednesday & Friday
● Year 6 – Wednesday & Thursday
Warm regards,
Mr. Leathers
Head of School
We can't wait to welcome you back after the holidays, all refreshed and ready for another exciting year of adventures together.
Warmly,
Everyone at Portland

A quick reminder of the importance of being on time in the line at 20 to 9. Our school day begins at 8.40 am and pick up is 3.30pm.

Would you like to support your child and our school be becoming an Academy Community Council (ACC) member? This role used to be called a school governor.

Our community council members will also visit the academy once per term to meet with a member of staff to talk about a specific school priority and speak with and listen to pupils, staff or parents.

A full day of Diabetic , Asthmatic, allergy and epilepsy training today to ensure we are fully up to date with all the latest information. Well done ladies.

F2 had a brilliant time exploring Blue Planet Aquarium this week!
Our day started off with a sensory workshop, helping to organise creatures into the right habitat.
We then had some time to explore, and saw so many different types of fish, frogs and insects!
We ended our day with a trip to the shark tunnel, followed by a scuba diving show and a biscuit in the sunshine ![]()
It's safe to say we all had a blast!
A special thanks to Mr Alfie for stepping in last minute, and letting the children measure how tall you are!!

wow! A huge well done to Co-op Academy Woodslee for putting on an excellent Careers Fayre.
#TeamPortland really enjoyed meeting all the different people from so many different types of work.
We had doctors, architects, paramedics, people from the food industry, civil and industrial engineers, a pastor from a local church, people who support schools, two ladies from Nuclear Industry and so many other really interesting and inspiring people.
A huge thank you for our invitation we really appreciated it. Also thank you to all the people who gave up their time to inspire our children.
Mr Leathers and Mrs Smith were really proud of how they represented Portland.

In Apple Class, we're absolutely loving diving into our child-led interests, and what an incredible few days it's been! Our imaginations have soared, transforming us into bug hunters, artists, authors, architects, police officers, and even chefs!
We believe that imagination is a powerful tool for growth and development. So, here's a little challenge for you: take a moment to see the world through the eyes of your child. You might be amazed at what you discover and who you can become!

This superstar received the Head Teacher’s reward from Mr Leathers for her fantastic writing!

What a splash! Years 1 and 2 had a fantastic time at Bubbles in New Brighton yesterday, despite the wet weather on the way. Huge thanks to Miss Campbell, Miss Munnerley, Miss Jones, and our wonderful parent helpers for making it such a memorable day for the children. This trip was made possible by the #CommunityFund covering the children's travel and Mr. Leathers generously paying for our parent helpers.

A HUGE shout out to our Karate kids tonight. They each upgraded to their next belt and they were all amazing - Mrs Smith was so proud (her eyes may have leaked with pride!)
A massive thank you to Sensei Paul and Sensei Jesse for their time and patience throughout the year. Also thanks to Sensei Kate for the beautiful certificates.
Today was our last lesson of the year so this was the perfect end. Mrs Smith is happy to continue Karate Club next year - if your child is in Year 2 upwards and are interested let her know.

Beehive plunged into #SkyArts week today, mastering the art of drawing basic figures and transforming them into incredible superheroes! Their amazing cartoons clearly show how using simple shapes dramatically elevated their skills. Plus, they demonstrated excellent listening – well done, everyone!

Miss Campbell kicked off an exciting journey for Year 1 into the world of money! They began exploring what coins and notes look like, and discovering the unique value of each one.

This fantastic book “Poems and stories from Birkenhead North” contains the work of our children, stories and poems.
Written and published to highlight just how much we love our local library and what an enormous part it plays in so many of our lives.
Thanks to Becks from North Birkenhead Development Trust - St James Centre for choosing our children’s work to be in such an important book.

Thank you for all the lovely comments on social media about our great team! We appreciate all your feedback.
Year 6 enjoyed a wonderfully cultural day in Port Sunlight yesterday! They delved into the Lady Lever Art Gallery, discovering how Viscount Leverhulme revolutionized modern advertising. Students were captivated by the diverse collection, choosing their favorite paintings and sculptures, and were particularly struck by the exceptional craftsmanship of the furniture.
Their exploration continued with a stroll around the picturesque model village, including a visit to the church where William Hesketh Lever and his wife, Elizabeth, are laid to rest. After a delightful picnic on the Museum Green, they wound down with some energetic football, cricket, and a well-deserved ice cream. A big thank you to Mrs. Mumford for capturing these great moments!

A huge well done to all our Karate Kids – you're smashing your lessons with Sensei Paul and Sensei Jesse! Good luck everyone!
Since achieving our Green Flag Distinction, it was a real highlight to meet with the Eco Council once more today. We not only brainstormed our upcoming September initiatives but also enjoyed some hands-on planting.

Our Year 2s had a fantastic afternoon diving into the skills needed for 3D art! They expertly manipulated paper through cutting, ripping, curling, spiraling, bending, and folding.

Our children had an absolute blast baking with Leah yesterday! We heard the cakes, boasting three kinds of chocolate, were utterly amazing. We're absolutely thrilled to share some incredible news: Ofsted has officially recognized us as a GOOD school in ALL areas! This is our first "GOOD" report in 13 years, and we couldn't be prouder.
This monumental achievement is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our amazing staff, our supportive families, our committed governors, and most importantly, our wonderful pupils.

It's been absolutely wonderful to witness the beautiful friendships blossoming within Apple Class! Every child has been happily engaged in play, whether independently exploring, collaborating with others, or even lending a helping hand to a friend.
Miss Barr has truly loved watching these budding friendships flourish! She was especially impressed by how attentively they listened to one another and worked together as a team to complete their activities.

What a fantastic start to our World of Work Week for Year 6! We were incredibly fortunate to host a lineup of truly impressive visitors, and we're so thankful to each of them for sharing their time and expertise with our students.
Our Year 6 pupils had the amazing opportunity to meet a police officer, a video editor, a student from Everton FC, a dedicated nurse, a talented hairdresser, and a passionate trade unionist. It was especially wonderful to welcome back former Portland pupils, Charlie and Lewis, and we're so pleased they agreed to return and work with us.
Every single one of our visitors was incredibly inspiring, making for a truly memorable first day for our children.
Today marks an incredibly exciting day for Miss Smith as she begins her maternity leave! Her little one is due in just three weeks – how amazing is that?!
Please join us in wishing her the very best of luck. We hope she gets plenty of rest before her much-loved and much-awaited baby joins #TeamPortland!
We absolutely can't wait to meet her little one in just a few short weeks. Don't forget to say your goodbyes to Miss Smith today!
What an incredible day for our Year 6 students! Every single child had the invaluable experience of being interviewed by either Mollie, Megan, or Heather. A huge thank you to these wonderful ladies who were so patient and kind, offering insightful feedback to each child that truly boosted their confidence. The children were beaming with pride!
As part of this fantastic career-related learning week, every student wrote a letter of application and participated in a formal interview. The feedback was outstanding, with our Year 6s described as articulate, polite, well-mannered, and confident—what a testament to their character!
Mrs. Smith has poured so much effort into creating this enriching week for them, and it's clear every child found something they genuinely enjoyed. She's absolutely loved teaching Year 6 this week, and their hard work and engagement have certainly made it a memorable one!

Day 3 of our World of Work week brought an incredibly insightful visit for our Year 6 students to the North Birkenhead Development Trust - St James Centre, where they met with Becks.
They gained fascinating insights into a wide array of roles, learning what it's like to be a Charity Manager, an Early Years Advisor, an advocate, an author, an illustrator, a support worker, and many other vital positions all housed within the same building.
A huge thank you to Becks for a truly informative day that showcased the diverse career paths available right within our community!
